Dependent Visa
If you’re a family member of someone holding an eligible UK work visa, student visa, business visa, or ancestry visa, you may be able to apply for a UK Dependant Visa. However, not all work or student visa holders can bring their dependants to the UK. If you’re unsure about your eligibility, it’s best to consult with us for clarification. A “dependant” typically refers to the partner, spouse, or child of the main visa holder.
Who Can Apply for a UK Dependant Visa?
Your partner and children can apply to join you in the UK as your dependants, provided they meet the eligibility requirements. Each dependant must complete a separate visa application. If the application is successful, the dependant’s visa will usually end on the same date as the main visa holder’s.
A dependant partner or child can be:
- Your husband, wife, civil partner, or unmarried partner.
- Your child under 18, including children born in the UK during your stay.
- Your child over 18 if they are already in the UK as your dependant.
Proof of Relationship
To apply, you’ll need to provide evidence of your relationship to your dependant. This could include:
- Marriage or civil partnership certificates.
- Birth certificates (for children).
Dependant Visa Requirements for Partners
To apply for a dependant visa for your partner, you must be able to prove one of the following:
- You are in a civil partnership or marriage that is recognised in the UK.
- You have been living together in a relationship for at least two years when you apply.
Dependant Visa Requirements for Children
To qualify, your child must:
- Live with you, unless they are in full-time education away from home, such as at boarding school or university.
- Not be married or in a civil partnership.
You will need to provide proof of their address, such as:
- A bank statement.
- Credit card bills.
Financial Requirements for Dependant Visa Holders
The financial requirements depend on the type of visa held by the main visa holder. In most cases, if both the main visa holder and the dependant have been in the UK for 12 months or more, there is no financial requirement to meet.
Pathway from Dependant Visa to Settlement (ILR)
Dependant visa holders can apply for settlement (Indefinite Leave to Remain or ILR) once the main visa holder is granted ILR, typically after five continuous years in the UK. To qualify for ILR, partners must:
- Remain in a genuine relationship with the main visa holder.
- Have sufficient income to support themselves without public funds.
- Continue their relationship after applying.
Children must continue living with their parents (unless they are boarding or studying at university), be adequately supported and housed, and must not be married, in a civil partnership, or living independently.
